Korea ETF Market Trends: Semiconductors Drive Growth Amid Thematic Investment Expansion
Mirae Asset's 'TIGER Semiconductor TOP10 ETF' has surpassed 10 trillion KRW in assets under management, making it the largest thematic ETF in the Korean market. Concentrated investments in leading domestic semiconductor companies such as SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics fueled outstanding returns of over 53% this year, with strong inflows from individual investors amid robust sector fundamentals and surging AI infrastructure investment. Leveraged products like the 'TIGER Semiconductor TOP10 Leverage ETF' have also achieved notable asset milestones, reflecting the dominance of semiconductors which now account for over 13% of ETF assets, and have prompted Samsung Asset Management to launch new ETFs that balance semiconductor stocks and government bonds to address pension fund demand and optimize asset allocation. Beyond semiconductors, thematic ETFs focused on trends such as nuclear energy and AI are proliferating in the Korean market. Nuclear energy ETFs have posted extraordinary returns of over 90% year-to-date, whereas U.S. AI software ETFs have experienced sell-offs due to concerns over their profit structure. Experts caution that thematic ETF investors should pay close attention to timing, product differentiation, and the sustainability of investment themes. Meanwhile, in the bio sector, Korean bio ETFs have faced declining performance due to market distrust in Samchundang Pharm, with some funds down as much as 20%. In contrast, U.S. and Chinese bio ETFs have performed well, gaining 6-9% driven by strong individual company performance. In the pension market, there is a significant shift from principal-guaranteed products to ETFs and equity funds, led by the 40s-50s demographic, with semiconductor and thematic ETFs driving much of the outperformance observed.
