Growth and Prospects of the ETF Market

The ETF market has reached a daily average trading volume approaching 12 trillion won, setting a new record. This surge is attributed to the rising interest in ETFs as indices such as the KOSPI reach new highs and AI themes proliferate. In recent years, ETFs have been traded at higher volumes than individual stocks, with increasing investor preference for index-tracking products.
As of 2023, the total net assets of the ETF market have grown to over 329 trillion won, with an increasing number of asset management companies launching new ETF products. This growth is largely driven by rising ETF prices, and the potential introduction of new leveraged ETFs and 3x index-following ETFs is expected to positively impact further market expansion.
To support this growth, financial authorities are reviewing the possible allowance of leveraged and 3x index-following ETFs. This measure is assessed as a way to diversify market risks, and future diversification of the ETF market and expanded investment opportunities are anticipated.
