Korean Investors Flock to US AI & Semiconductor ETFs Amid Thematic ETF Launches
Korean investors have significantly increased their exposure to US-listed ETFs, with assets under custody now exceeding KRW 62 trillion—a 28% rise from earlier this year. According to latest data, ETFs tracking the Nasdaq-100 such as QQQ, QQQM, TQQQ, QLD, as well as leveraged semiconductor plays like SOXL, have seen remarkable growth. This surge is attributed to improving earnings outlooks for semiconductor firms and a rising demand for core infrastructure, driven by the rapid expansion of AI technologies. Domestic asset managers are also aggressively launching new thematic ETFs to capture growth trends. Mirae Asset Global Investments introduced the 'TIGER Google Value Chain ETF', providing exposure to 20 stocks in the Google-centric AI ecosystem and optical communication value chain. Key holdings include Lumentum, InnoLight, Broadcom, and Ciena—companies instrumental in data connectivity and AI infrastructure. The ETF is also accessible via retirement and pension accounts, making it a strategic option for long-term investors. Meanwhile, Samsung Asset Management's 'KODEX US AI Power Core Infrastructure' ETF has posted a strong 58.3% return year-to-date and 115.6% over the past year. The growth is spurred by mounting electricity demand from data centers fueled by AI service expansion. Goldman Sachs forecasts an additional 25% increase in power consumption by 2030, underscoring the long-term growth prospects of the IT, semiconductor, and infrastructure sectors.
