Trends and Decline in Individual Professional Investors

The number of individual professional investors in South Korea has been decreasing for two consecutive years. As of 2023, both annual income and net assets have declined, with 25,438 individual professional investors counted by the end of 2024. Notably, these investors have significant portfolios concentrated on stocks and ETFs, maintaining a steady investment in domestic stocks.
In contrast to general investors, individual professional investors tend to diversify their assets more broadly. According to data from the Financial Supervisory Service, these investors allocate 69.9% to stocks and ETFs, while also dedicating 14.5% to bonds and 14.3% to funds. General investors, however, have a higher concentration of 88.8% in stocks and ETFs.
Professional investors have shown a tendency to focus on domestic bonds and private equity funds within a less regulated investment environment. However, investment in high-risk financial products like CFDs is on the decline, earning them a reputation for demonstrating expertise in their investment strategies.
