Retail Investors Focus on Leverage ETFs, Driving Market Volatility

In March, Korean retail investors, commonly referred to as 'Seohak ants,' made significant purchases in triple leverage ETFs, particularly focusing on the SOXL, which tracks the US semiconductor industry. Their investment reached approximately 1.3 billion dollars, reflecting expectations for high short-term returns even in volatile conditions. Interest in the KORU ETF also surged with buying activity totaling 161 million dollars. While leverage ETFs can offer substantial profits, the combination of volatility and compound effects poses a risk of escalating losses with minor market declines.
The debut of Kosdaq Active ETFs has generated significant buzz in the financial markets. Samsung Active Asset Management and Timefolio Asset Management competed on the first day with their respective products 'KoAct Kosdaq Active' and 'TIME Kosdaq Active,' attracting around 600 billion won from private investors. 'KoAct Kosdaq Active' drew attention with an impressive 11.94% increase in value. Based on the Kosdaq index, these ETFs are expected to draw strong demand moving forward.
The volatility in the domestic stock market is being attributed to the rapid influx of personal funds through ETFs. The surge in ETF trading volumes has amplified market volatility, with increased trading in index-related ETFs further exacerbating market swings. Retail investors have seized the upward trends to invest in ETFs, yet concerns arise that this method may heighten market instability. The concentration of funds in leverage products has essentially fueled the rise in volatility.
