Recent ETF Market Trends: Strong Performance in Oil, US Index, and Semiconductor ETFs
Over the past month, ETFs related to crude oil have delivered significant returns in both domestic and global markets. This performance is attributed to heightened supply concerns stemming from the Iran war, rollover gains in the futures market, and a pronounced backwardation effect. However, experts caution that should oil prices decline, the current rollover profits may swiftly turn into costs. Looking ahead, OPEC+ is expected to ease production cuts in the second half, potentially increasing oil supply. Amid increased market volatility due to US-Iran military tensions, Korean investors are shifting from individual US stocks to index-oriented products, including US-based ETFs and leveraged sector funds. The allocation to single tech stocks such as Tesla and Nvidia is decreasing as a result. This trend reflects investors’ strategies to manage risks in an environment of high oil prices and elevated volatility, with further adjustments anticipated as market stability evolves. Meanwhile, the KOSPI index surged, led by strong performances from major semiconductor stocks, resulting in notable gains for leverage ETFs focused on IT and semiconductors. Foreign and institutional investors drove this rally with large-scale net buying, while retail investors were net sellers during the period. In contrast, inverse and oil ETFs underperformed, and the most substantial fund inflow among ETFs was recorded by KODEX Leverage.
