Surge in Leveraged ETF Investment and Regulatory Warnings Post Iran Conflict
Following the outbreak of conflict between Iran and the United States, there has been a noticeable shift in individual investors’ ETF investment strategies in Korea. Previously, mainstream ETFs such as KODEX KOSDAQ150 and KODEX 200 enjoyed broad popularity, but interest has decreased in the wake of the war. In contrast, leveraged ETFs, such as KODEX KOSDAQ150 Leverage and TIGER Semiconductor 10, continue to attract significant investment, as individuals increasingly treat market declines as buying opportunities for high-risk, high-reward products. This trend is underscored by the market capitalization of ETFs tracking KOSPI200 and KOSDAQ150 surging by approximately 75% year-on-year to 21.7 trillion won. Regulatory authorities have expressed concerns over the rapid growth in leveraged and inverse ETF investments and have noted a sharp increase in novice investors, with over 300,000 individuals completing pre-investment training courses since the start of the year. In response, the Financial Supervisory Service has strengthened oversight and disclosure requirements for leveraged products, highlighting the amplified risks associated with these instruments. The heightened focus on investor protection stresses the need for thorough education and caution, as leveraged products magnify both potential gains and losses.
