Aerospace Themed ETFs Surge in Korea: Investor Focus Shifts to Semiconductor ETFs
Between May 11 and 15, US aerospace-themed ETFs achieved remarkable returns in the Korean ETF market. The TIGER US Aerospace Tech ETF posted an outstanding 39.65% return, topping the market, followed by SOL US Aerospace Top10 (29.53%) and ACE US Aerospace Tech Active (26.11%), highlighting the robust performance of space and low-earth-orbit satellite ETFs. The surge was driven largely by heightened investor sentiment surrounding SpaceX's Starship test launch, substantial share price increases of 'New Space' companies such as Rocket Lab and Intuitive Machines, and expectations of new government space sector contracts. Conversely, ETFs focused on AI power equipment and secondary batteries experienced downturns due to investors cashing in gains.
Despite the dramatic rally in aerospace ETFs, individual investors have been channeling significant funds into semiconductor ETFs. During the same period, semiconductor-themed ETFs attracted 375.6 billion KRW, reflecting sustained expectations for growth in the technology sector. This suggests that while aerospace themes have produced exceptional short-term gains, long-term-focused investors continue to favor mainstream tech sectors like semiconductors. The domestic ETF market is thus witnessing the coexistence of sector-specific rallies and continued investor preference for stable, growth-oriented assets.
