Aerospace ETFs: Navigating Between Volatility and Growth Expectations
Recently, aerospace-themed exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have garnered significant attention, fueled by heightened anticipation around SpaceX’s potential listing. In both the Korean and US markets, there has been a surge of new aerospace ETFs—such as TIGER US Space Tech—this year alone, contributing to the sector’s expansion. However, short-term volatility has been notable, with ETF returns dropping by as much as -11% to -4%, driven by technical limitations at key aerospace firms, insider share disposals by senior management, and the increased weighting of smaller private space companies. Further exacerbating this volatility are profit-taking sales and isolated issues, including liquidity shortages and incidents at select private space enterprises. On the other hand, investor demand for space industry exposure remains strong, as evidenced by the global pioneer space ETF 'UFO' having surged 32% year-to-date. Investors are increasingly favoring products focused on core space technologies and infrastructure, with some ETFs now designed to include up to a 25% stake in SpaceX should it list. Nevertheless, caution is advised, especially regarding investments involving unlisted equity allocations, as risks related to illiquidity and transparency persist.
