Carbon Emissions and Oil ETFs Surge, Renewables ETFs Retreat
Last week, the global ETF market saw a significant rally in carbon emissions and oil-related ETFs, driven by geopolitical tensions and rising energy prices. ‘SOL Europe Carbon Emissions Futures S&P(H)’ gained 11.29%, and ‘KODEX Europe Carbon Emissions Futures ICE(H)’ rose 10.04%, marking the highest weekly returns in the market. Analysts attribute this surge to heightened demand for carbon credits following the escalation in US-Iran tensions and an increase in natural gas prices. However, experts caution that investing in carbon emissions ETFs for the medium to long term should not rely solely on LNG price volatility. In contrast, ETFs related to renewable energy and nuclear power experienced overall declines. Semiconductor, battery (secondary cell), and gaming sector ETFs performed strongly, attracting substantial inflows. ‘TIGER Semiconductor TOP10’ saw inflows of KRW 670.7 billion, while battery material ETFs like ‘KODEX Core Battery Materials 10’ and ‘BNK Battery Cathode Materials’ recorded notable returns of 6.71% and 6.14%, respectively. Gaming sector ETFs, including ‘KODEX Game Industry’ and ‘TIGER Game TOP10’, also posted gains, reflecting investor focus on specific industries amid heightened market volatility.
