ETF Market Trends: Leverage Sell-offs, Weakening Kosdaq Sentiment, REIT Market Cools
Over the past month, large-scale selling of leverage, KOSPI, KOSDAQ, and semiconductor ETFs has been observed in the domestic ETF market. Individual investors have actively realized short-term gains in leveraged ETF products after rapid returns, reallocating some funds towards AI, semiconductor-themed, and US equity ETFs. The KOSPI index reached record highs on strong buying of major stocks such as SK hynix and Doosan Enerbility, but notable selling pressure was evident in ETFs like the TIGER Semiconductor TOP10. In contrast, steady net outflows from KOSDAQ ETFs, notably the KODEX KOSDAQ150, demonstrate a declining appeal of the KOSDAQ relative to KOSPI, compounded by negative sentiment in pharmaceutical and biotech sectors. The government is reviewing policies to vitalize the KOSDAQ market, including the launch of a national growth fund and introduction of a promotion/relegation system. Sector ETFs linked to consumption and entertainment surged, while insurance ETFs also saw robust gains. Conversely, shipbuilding and semiconductor inverse ETFs underperformed, with remarkable differences in net flows for KODEX Semiconductor and KODEX Leverage. The REIT market suffered a downturn due to the corporate rehabilitation application by JR Global REITs, resulting in all nine listed REIT ETFs posting negative returns. However, industry voices caution against interpreting this as a systemic crisis across the entire REIT sector.
