Contrasting Strategies and Outcomes in Q3 ETF Market

In the third quarter of this year, individual and institutional investors demonstrated contrasting investment strategies in the domestic ETF market. Individual investors predominantly purchased products betting on a market decline, such as 'KODEX 200 Futures Inverse 2X', resulting in losses ranging from -22.8% to -25.05%. This outcome reflects the strong rise in the KOSPI index while many individual investors opted to sell and exit the local stock market, notably offloading large semiconductor stocks and showing a preference for foreign stocks and safe-haven assets.
Conversely, institutional investors focused on leveraged indices like the KOSDAQ 150, achieving a profit margin of 18.53%. Investments in policy-beneficiary thematic stocks also contributed to their positive returns. The upwards movement in the KOSPI index coincides with these favorable institutional investment results. Overall, market volatility appears set to rise, especially around the 'Chuseok holiday', and the October earnings season is expected to significantly influence future market momentum.
