Retail Investors Exit KOSDAQ ETFs Amid Falling Appeal
Retail investors have recently been withdrawing funds from KOSDAQ exchange-traded funds (ETFs), signaling waning confidence in the market. Notably, KODEX KOSDAQ150 and TIGER KOSDAQ150 have witnessed continuous net selling over the past 20 trading days, reflecting the diminishing investment appeal of the KOSDAQ relative to the KOSPI. Concerns in the pharmaceutical and biotech sectors have further dampened investor sentiment, curbing the upward momentum of KOSDAQ-listed stocks.
Amid this backdrop, many retail investors are realizing profits in KOSDAQ ETFs and reallocating capital towards KOSPI large-cap stocks, which are showing stronger performance. The market’s contrasting movements have prompted the government to consider market revitalization measures, including the launch of a National Growth Fund and the introduction of a promotion-relegation system for the KOSDAQ. Investors are actively adjusting their portfolios in anticipation of these policy initiatives and the shifting risk landscape in individual sectors. In the medium term, the efficacy of government policies and sector-specific risks will be key to determining whether the KOSDAQ can recover its momentum.
