In-depth Review: New Semiconductor ETFs and Market Trends in Korea and Abroad

Mirae Asset Management has launched Korea's first covered call ETF utilizing individual stock options, the 'TIGER Semiconductor TOP10 Covered Call Active ETF.' This fund invests in ten leading Korean semiconductor stocks, including Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, and employs a covered call strategy to mitigate losses from market volatility while generating monthly cash flows. Notably, option premium income is tax-exempt, offering investors the advantage of reduced tax burdens on dividends. The fund also features active management, adjusting the proportion of options sold in response to market conditions, and has already attracted strong demand with a year-to-date return of 72% and over KRW 1.7 trillion in net purchases.
Meanwhile, Nvidia's dominance in artificial intelligence semiconductors is evident in its nearly 20% weighting within the SMH ETF, the world's largest semiconductor sector ETF. SMH has delivered an impressive 273% return over the past five years, fueled by the AI infrastructure boom and the semiconductor supercycle, but its heavy reliance on Nvidia and the inherent volatility of the sector pose notable investment risks.
In the US, 'Roundhill Memory ETF (DRAM)', the world’s first dedicated memory semiconductor ETF, made headlines by attracting approximately KRW 1.4 trillion in just two weeks after listing. DRAM is an actively managed ETF focused on companies producing high bandwidth memory and DRAM, with SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics among its major holdings. Such developments reflect the global expansion and diversification of semiconductor ETFs, highlighting the sector’s robust growth.
