Korea's Semiconductor ETFs Surge Amidst AI Boom and Inflows from Pension Funds
Since early 2023, Korea’s semiconductor ETF market has experienced explosive growth, driven by the advancement of AI technologies and increasing inflows from pension funds and retail investors. Mirae Asset’s ‘TIGER Semiconductor TOP10 Leverage ETF’ led the market in net individual purchases, with AUM soaring to approximately 2.5 trillion KRW—growing tenfold since the beginning of the year—and recording a remarkable 404.8% return. Similarly, the ‘TIGER Semiconductor TOP10 ETF’ saw its assets rise fourfold from 2.8 trillion KRW to over 13 trillion KRW, indicating strong and persistent interest from individual investors. Both ETFs focus on major Korean semiconductor firms like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, with expansion in AI infrastructure and increased demand for memory semiconductors cited as key drivers of growth. Shinhan Asset Management's 'SOL AI Semiconductor TOP2 Plus ETF' rapidly surpassed 2 trillion KRW in AUM within just two months of launch, with net purchases by individuals exceeding 1 trillion KRW. This ETF, too, invests heavily in Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, and is attracting funds from both institutional and pension accounts, suggesting a broadening investor base. However, as a performance-based product, it carries the risk of principal loss, which investors should be aware of. Additionally, KB Asset Management's 'RISE Samsung Electronics SK Hynix Bond Mixed 50 ETF' has gained traction as a pension-friendly product. This ETF, consisting of 25% each in Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix and the remainder in government bonds, exceeded 2 trillion KRW in assets within 51 days of listing. It qualifies as a safe asset in retirement pension accounts, enabling 100% allocation, and has attracted substantial pension investments. With AI industry growth as the backdrop, the expansion of Korea's semiconductor ETF market is expected to continue for the foreseeable future.
