Trends in Korea’s Semiconductor Covered Call and Single-Stock Leveraged ETF Market
Samsung Asset Management’s launch of the ‘KODEX Semiconductor Target Weekly Covered Call ETF’ marks a significant development in Korea’s ETF landscape. The new product invests 100% in the KRX Semiconductor TR Index with over half of its assets allocated to leading stocks Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. By utilizing a covered call strategy—selling KOSPI200 weekly call options—the ETF targets an annualized yield of 9%, with surplus income reinvested in semiconductor stocks. The fund also highlights tax-exempt option premium benefits and offers investors two monthly dividend opportunities, catering to those seeking both growth and steady income amid the semiconductor recovery and rising AI demand. Mirae Asset Global Investments has also entered the market with a semiconductor covered call ETF, intensifying competition. Mirae’s approach actively utilizes single-stock options to leverage stock volatility and aims for higher premium income. As a result, the covered call ETF market in Korea is rapidly expanding with increasing investor interest. Separately, there is strong anticipation regarding the listing of Korea’s first single-stock leveraged and inverse ETFs based on Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. The listing was postponed to the 27th due to overlap with a national fund launch, yet tens of thousands of investors have already completed pre-education, reflecting immense market interest. While these products offer double the returns of the underlying assets, market experts caution investors to be aware of the high volatility and associated risks.
