Competition and Strategies in Korea’s First Single Stock Leveraged ETF Launch

Samsung Asset Management and Mirae Asset Global Investments are vying for leadership as Korea introduces its first single-stock leveraged ETFs based on Samsung Electronics and SK hynix. Samsung emphasizes large-scale creation using a physical in-kind subscription structure, aiming to expand market share, while Mirae Asset highlights flexibility and has attracted significant foreign investment through cash-based subscriptions.
The two firms differentiate themselves in fee structures as well. Mirae Asset sets a highly competitive annual fee of 0.0901%, seeking cost leadership, while some asset managers pursue further product differentiation with inverse ETF offerings. Notably, Mirae Asset secured 329 billion KRW of foreign inflows at the outset—an unprecedented volume for the domestic ETF market—which underscores the segment's potential.
Given the high volatility and negative compounding effects of single-stock leveraged ETFs, these products are best suited for short-term strategies or as part of a diversified portfolio. Asset managers are leveraging strategies such as liquidity enhancement, cost efficiencies, and global capital attraction to establish an early foothold, while investors are urged to carefully consider each ETF’s structure and inherent risks.
