Senior Public Officials See Substantial Wealth Increase Through ETF Gains and Royalties
Recent disclosures reveal significant increases in the personal wealth of top government officials, including President Lee Jae-myung, his aides, and senior financial regulators. President Lee reported 4.97 billion KRW in assets at the end of 2023—an increase of approximately 1.88 billion KRW from the previous year—mainly attributed to book royalties and substantial returns from exchange-traded fund (ETF) investments. The president had previously pledged investments in KODEX 200, KODEX KOSDAQ150, and TIGER 200 ETFs, with rising stock markets substantially boosting his savings. Additional factors for asset growth included royalty income, salary increases, and family assets reported together. Presidential aides hold an average of around 2.75 billion KRW in assets, with Legal Secretary Lee Jang-hyung leading at 13.41 billion KRW. His wealth increase was notably influenced by Tesla stock gains and other investment returns, and ten aides are identified as multi-home owners. Meanwhile, Financial Supervisory Service Governor Lee Chan-jin recorded a 2.2 billion KRW asset increase in just three months after selling real estate and reallocating the proceeds into ETFs, now holding assets totaling over 40.7 billion KRW. These reports underscore how ETF and equity investment gains, coupled with asset reallocation from real estate, have driven wealth growth among senior officials.
